“And Eli said to Samuel, ‘Go lie down and it shall be if He calls you, that you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord for your servant is listening.” I Samuel 3:9 (NASB)
It had been a long day - and a long night of ministry. The three girls I shared a room with were just as tired as I was when we finally came in from working on the streets and at the “Planet Jerusalem”, our ministry coffee house in Denver. So, bidding Linda, Sharon, and Ruth goodnight, I quickly drifted off into a sweet, but exhausted sleep.
Some time in the early morning I heard someone whisper...”Bron.”
I woke up and said “yes,” but there was no answer. I thought I had just imagined it and laid back down to sleep, but before I could get back to sleep, the voice came again and said “Bron.”
“What do you want?” I whispered, looking around, but still there was no answer. I lay down again, but by this time was pretty much awake. Soon the voice came. “Bron”.
“What,” I said. What do you want?” I wasn’t whispering any more. Still there was no answer so I called out, “Ruth, is that you?...Linda...Sharon. Who’s calling me?”
Ruth, Linda and Sharon were there, but they were all fast asleep, a fact verified by the sounds coming from the other beds.
Suddenly I realized that this was the voice of God calling me. I eased back onto my bed and listened, but the voice didn’t come again. After a time I drifted back to sleep, with a strong sense of His presence and the certainty that He knew my name.
